#1 Cooking/Baking
This is the number one activity that my kids love that their grandparents teach them! Grandma and grandpa have a bit more patience and energy to deal with the mess and explanation of the science behind things like yeast, eggs, temperature, letting dough rise, etc.
#2 Bible/Religion
If your family is religious then having grandparents spend a day or two a week/month focusing on helping teach your children the ins and outs of the Bible can be so beneficial. Grandparents doing bible study or simply having conversations about God can tremendously help reinforce the teachings they’ve been learning.
#3 Art
My mom loves arts and crafts, I do too! With homeschooling I try to incorporate plenty of arts and crafts, but with everything going on I don’t always do these as often as I’d like. So it is wonderful that when my kids visit grandma she usually allows them to paint or do a craft. She teaches them different techniques and methods. She challenges them to try something different from last time, but she also allows them to find their own artistic vision.
Art and Crafts could be anything from painting, to sewing, to crocheting, paper machete, origami. Anything that creates something that you think is beautiful!
#4 Gardening
Gardening can teach a child so much, from hard work getting the garden started and upkeep to reward when it’s finally harvesting time. Along the journey of gardening the children can learn about, seasonal changes, growth patterns, parts of a pant, pest control, consistency with watering and weeding, food preservation, and so much more!
#5 Tools & Power Tools
You might be surprised at how many people have no idea how to use simple tools like a crescent wrench or a powered drill! I think that teaching kids the basics of tools and power tools sets them up to be self sufficient and confident adults.
There are tons of tools and power tools out there but learning the basics could really set kids ahead in life. Things as simple as how and why to use clamps, how to pre-drill holes so the wood doesn’t split when a screw is driven through it, how to hang a picture so that it is level and spaced evenly, and soo much more!
Each week or month could be a different task that teaches various use of tools!
#6 Survival Skills
Teaching kids basic survival skills could serve them well! Survival skills help kids develop critical thinking skills, world knowledge, problem solving, preparedness, and much more!
Teaching kids about survival could consist of things like how to start a fire, navigation, poisonous and edible plants, how to build a shelter, hunting, fishing, how to find clean water, how to care for a wound, etc.
#7 Safety
Sometimes it can be easy to forget that kids need to be taught safety principals.
Going over and even practicing safety skills can help the child know what to do in dangerous situations. Things like fire safety, street safety, spatial awareness, stranger danger, firearm safety, water safety, etc. Some safety skills may be more specific to the area that you live, such as: what to do if you encounter bears, snakes, flash floods, shipwreck, etc.
#8 History
The older you are the more history you’ve lived through and have learned about. Passing down stories and experiences can teach children so much! Things like, doing research on an important historical moment or figure, why we do the things we do, how things came about, or even learning about your family tree counts as history!
#9 Any Skills or Wisdom that a grandparent might possess!
This list could go on and on, but really its main purpose is to help spark some inspiration for ideas of things grandparents can teach kids.
